Roy Christian to Lead District DAEP Program

 

Hutto ISD proudly announces the appointment of Mr. Roy Christian as principal of the district's DAEP (Disciplinary Alternative Education Program).  The DAEP had been housed alongside the Riverhorse Academy (RHA), which is Hutto ISD’s academic alternative learning program, since its inception.  Splitting the campuses and programs for the 2021-22 school year will allow each program to develop and expand its own identity and educational focus.

In the spring of 2020, RHA received a Blended Learning Grant from Raise Your Hand Texas, creating a need for more space.  As a standalone campus, RHA will be able to fulfill the expectations of the grant, expand programming and alternative learning opportunities, and become a viable school of choice for the district. The principal of that campus is Mr. Drew McConnaughhy.

Mr. Christian, who has served as the Hutto High School principal since 2014, welcomed the opportunity to assume the role of DAEP principal. Mr. Christian has previous experience in DAEP as a teacher and principal in Poteet ISD and San Antonio’s Southside ISD prior to coming to Hutto ISD as Farley Middle School principal in 2012.  He is the ideal candidate to serve in this capacity and assist the district with developing a viable DAEP program for addressing the unique needs of students with behavior challenges and/or the unintended consequences of poor choices some adolescents have a tendency to make.  He plans to expand parental outreach, training for parents and students, and bring in specialized programming for students in disciplinary settings.

“The district appreciates Mr. Christian’s dedication and outstanding work at Hutto High School,” said Superintendent Dr. Celina Estrada Thomas. “Under his leadership, the campus has managed tremendous growth over the last seven years, improved outcomes for students, increased the number of students enrolling in post-secondary institutions, increased the number of college-ready students, and most importantly, maintained a safe learning environment for teaching and learning.  We look forward to keeping him in the district where he will continue to excel and serve on the district leadership team.”
