Hippos Earn State UIL Robotics Championship
The Hutto United Robotics team has claimed the 2017 UIL State Championship at the BEST of Texas Robotics Tournament, held December 7-9 at the University of Texas at Dallas. The championship comes after last year's second place finish.
The Hutto United team also claimed First Place BEST Overall. The UIL State competition is combined with the BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science & Technology) regional competition involving teams from Texas and neighboring states. Hutto defeated 72 others schools to claim the BEST title.
In earning the state title, the Hutto team finished first in Exhibit and Interview category, first in Spirit and Sportsmanship, second in Marketing Presentation, third in Robot Design, and fifth in Head to Head Robot competition.
"This has been six years in the making," said Hutto United Coach, Andrew Haub. "When we first began, we only had 16 students and never dreamed of reaching this level. The students have a drive and work ethic you couldn't imagine, and it shows that hard work pays off! I am so proud of them!"
The Hutto United Team is made up of 75 students from Hutto High School, Hutto Middle School, and Farley Middle School. In addition to Haub, the coaches are Michelle Thorne from HHS; Ryan Mann and Joseph Sweeney from Hutto MS; and Mistie Young from Farley MS.
