District Announces 2019-20 Compensation Plan and Proposed Tax Decrease
The Hutto ISD Board of Trustees Thursday night approved the 2019-20 staff compensation plan, which includes an increase in compensation of an average of 9% for the most experienced teachers. The Board also approved a proposed 10-cent tax rate reduction. The proposed tax rate must still go through a public hearing before adoption in August.
The district’s compensation plan includes an average pay increase of 9% for employees on a teacher pay scale that have more than 25 years’ experience, while those with 22-25 years’ experience will receive an average 8% increase. Those on a teacher pay scale with 6-21 years’ experience will receive an average 7% increase and those with 0-5 years’ experience and on a teacher pay scale will receive an average 5% increase. All other employees will receive a 5% increase in pay above midpoint. In addition to teachers, librarians are included on the teacher pay scale.
“I am pleased that we are able to offer this kind of increase to our teachers and staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Celina Estrada Thomas. “We know that educators sacrifice a great deal to make a daily difference in the lives of kids. I am thankful for all of the staff of Hippo Nation. Each person impacts students in a unique way, and we want to compensate them to the fullest extent our budget allows.”
The district is able to budget the pay increases and the reduced tax rate while still adopting a balanced budget.
If approved in August, the tax rate reduction will mark the fourth consecutive year that the district has been able to lower the tax rate. This year’s proposed reduction will reduce the overall tax rate to $1.4984, which is a 6.35% reduction from the current rate.
