HMS Students Earn SFA Band Camp Awards

Isaac May and Rakayleigh Thomas, both band students at Hutto Middle School, were award-winning participants in the 2017 Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music’s series of band camps for middle and senior high school instrumentalists and drum majors.

May received the Outstanding Musicianship Award as a member of the 8th Grade Honors Band, and Thomas received the Outstanding Musicianship Award as a member of the 8th Grade Stone Fort Band.

More than 770 students participated in this year’s camps.

During the camps, students from across the state rehearsed and performed as members of various concert groups, receiving instruction from a world-class teaching staff composed of SFA music faculty and some of the best public school teachers in Texas, according to Dr. David Campo, associate director of bands at SFA and camp director.

SFA has conducted summer band camp programs for more than 55 years. “The camps have proven to be one of the university’s most effective recruiting tools and a positive experience for everyone involved,” said Dr. Gary Wurtz, director of the School of Music.

Isaac May and Rakayleigh Thomas, band students at Hutto Middle School, receive the Outstanding Musicianship Award from Weston Fisher, director of the 8th Grade Stone Fort Band, and Jason Tucker,  director of the 8th Grade Honors Band at the 2017 Stephen F. Austin State University Band Camp in Nacogdoches. Awards were presented at the conclusion of the June camp.
