Miss Poteet

Hello, Hutto Hippos, I am so happy to be working at Hutto middle school with our awesome 7th grade team!

This is my 6th year in education, but my 1st year as a middle school counselor.  I was born and raised in Tyler, Texas, before relocating to Georgetown and making it my home. I attended the University of Texas at Austin where I earned my Bachelors degree in Psychology. I then went on to get my Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of Mary Hardin-Baylor where I specialized in adolescent trauma.  I am a licensed clinical therapist and worked as an adolescent therapist for 3 years in individual counseling, inpatient hospitalization, and at the WILCO juvenile justice center.  I then worked as a middle school English and Social Studies teacher for 5 years teaching all three grade levels. My passion is deeply rooted in working with pre-teen age kids, and I always find it amazing how they teach me just as much as I teach them!

I love working with middle school students because I believe that middle school is a very challenging, but also a very important time in a person's life. Children going through puberty experience so many changes so quickly, and most of the time they just need someone to help them through it all! I know that this time can be confusing and frustrating for the children, but also for their parents and I aim to be a steady support system for you all.

My goal is to create a safe space for my 7th graders, and I want them all to know that I am here to help and support them as they navigate middle school. I am also here to help and support my students' parents as we work collaboratively to help your child be happy and successful!

One of my favorite quotes I came across as a therapist shows perfectly how I like to tackle problems in life: head on!

"I've heard there are troubles of more than one kind; some come from ahead, and some come from behind. But I've brought a big bat. I'm all ready, you see; now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!" --Dr. Seuss

I plan to be there for all my new 7th graders as we tackle their problems together and guide them through this messy, but wonderful time of their lives. I am so excited to meet all my new students and be there for you each step of this year!

Best wishes,

Shelby Poteet, M.A., LPC-I
