Dr. Jennifer Rumsey

Hello, Hutto Hippos, I am so happy to be returning for my third year at Hutto Middle School, and my first year working with the Class of 2030!

This is my 8th year working as a middle school counselor, and it will be my 24th year in public education. I come to you from southeast Texas. I was born and raised in Beaumont, Texas, and I am a proud mother to two teenagers, a son who is 20 and a daughter who is 18. I attended the University of Texas at Austin, where I earned my Bachelors degree in applied learning and development (teaching). I worked as an English and reading teacher for 17 years, and in the course of that time, I taught grades 6-11. I got my Masters degree from Lamar University in Counseling, and went on to earn my PhD from Texas Tech University.

I love working with middle school students because I believe that middle school is a very challenging, but also a very important time in a person's life. Children going through puberty experience so many changes so quickly! I know that this time can be confusing and frustrating for the children, but also for their parents.

My goal is to create a safe space for my 6th graders, and I want them all to know that I am here to help and support them as they navigate middle school. I am also here to help and support my students' parents as we work collaboratively to help your child be happy and successful.

The following quote summarizes one of the things I believe very deeply, and it is something that I live by:

"Our prime purpose in this life is to help others, and if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them"--Dalai Lama

I am super excited about working with sixth graders this year, and I cannot wait to meet all of the new 6th grade hippos!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Rumsey, PhD
