Ms. North

I'm so excited to meet you all!

Hi! My name is Jill North and 2021-2022 will be my 2nd year teaching 7th Grade Math at Farley Middle School! Last year was so much fun, I decided to do it again.

Every year my goal is the same: I want you to enjoy my class as we learn together. I know that not everyone loves math. But don't worry. It's going to be a great year! I know that many students start to hate math when they spend year after year confused about what we are learning. My goal is to take the time to for students that struggle so that it makes sense. I wasn't very good at math when I was in middle school. I just didn't get it.

For most students that "hate" math, they can usually remember the first year it stopped making sense. For me it was 6th grade.... sigh. But as an adult it all started to come together. Once you realize math is just a puzzle or a pattern -- a set of guidelines, perhaps-- then you can apply that pattern to anything. I love sudoku, logic puzzles and trivia in math class. I want to challenge my class with kindness.

In 7th grade On-level Math, our focus will be on understanding proportional relationships and applying proportional reasoning to all sorts of ideas and real world situations. *Hint* Whenever you hear that word "Proportional" just think "Multiplying and Dividing numbers by the same amount". Literally, if you can walk away from my class knowing that, my job is 50% complete!

We get to explore other great concepts such as:

Geometry! (Shape Math)

Area of all 2D shapes and Volume of Prisms and Pyramids

Algebra! (Math with Letters)

    2-step equations with 1 variable

Statistics! (Chart and Graph Math)

Probabilty or the likeliness of something happening

Displaying and reading data from Circle graphs, Box and Whisker Plots, and Dot Plots

Problem Solving! (Math with lots of words...)

In 7th Grade Advanced Math, we will dive into the same ideas but with a twist...

Geometry:

   Transformations

   Pythagorean Theorem

Area and Volume of Cones, Cylinders and Spheres

Algebra:

Multi-step equations with variables on both sides

   Systems of equations

Slope: All things with tables, graphs and equations!

I hope you are as excited as I am! This year is going to be great!
