Mrs. Desirae Hendricks Patterson

"It is such a blessing to be chosen to lead the River Horse family and to serve the students and families of our Hutto ISD Virtual Academy. I'm excited about engaging with students as they plan for their post-secondary experiences. I am most looking forward to having the opportunity to inspire excellence in their academics, character, and community just before they enter adulthood." -DHP

Mrs. Desirae A. Hendricks Patterson began her professional educational career in August 2010 as a Science teacher at her alma mater Reagan High School in Austin ISD. Mrs. DHP joined Hippo Nation in January 2020. She served as the Assistant Principal of Howard Norman Elementary from 2020-2023. She was named principal of River Horse Academy in May 2023.

As an educator and life-long learner, it is important to her that people broaden their perception by taking the time to share their experiences and learn from each other. It is important to BELIEVE in the goodness of people, ENGAGE with people, and TEACH the people as you are able. she encourages everyone to "Take the B.E.T." Her professional interests include equity in educational experiences, community involvement, as well as innovative teaching methods to catapult all learners. 

Mrs. DHP married her high school sweetheart, Chauncey Allen Patterson in October 2010. She is the momma to an amazing little girl named Heaven who attends Howard Norman Elementary.

Mrs. DHP was born and raised in Austin, Texas where she completed her high school education at John H. Reagan High School. After graduating, she went on to The University of Texas at San Antonio to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Multidisciplinary Sciences. While at The University of Texas at San Antonio, her most esteemed accomplishment was to help begin the UTEACH student organization and become the organization's first president. She was also instrumental in the organization's change of its name to GEEMS; Generating Educational Excellence in Math and Science.
In 2010, she returned to serve her community at her alma mater and completed her student teaching at John H. Reagan High School in Austin, Texas. She served the students of the Reagan High School Community as a Science Teacher; teaching every science available over the course of her time there. She also served as part of the AVID Site Team, Campus Advisory Council, Senior Class Sponsor,  Cheerleading Coach, and Assistant Girls Basketball Coach. She decided to further her education and direct her efforts toward administration by earning a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from Lamar University. After teaching Integrated Chemistry and Physics, TAKS Intervention, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, and Forensic Science for seven years, she left Reagan to begin her career in Educational Administration as a Campus Testing Coordinator at Stony Point High School. Then, she went on to begin her first administrative role as Assistant Principal at Howard Norman Elementary in Hutto ISD in January 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
