Welcome to Honors and On Level Pre-Calculus

Welcome to a wonderful year in Pre-Calculus.  My name is Mr. Sims and I can't wait to see what we can accomplish together this year.  I look forward to helping you reach your goals in math!  The biggest keys to success in Pre-Calculus is to not get behind, do the work, and meet challenges head on.  The course is extremely fast paced as there is a massive amount of material to cover in a very short time.  Furthermore, you will need to learn to study in this course.  Some things will by necessity need to be committed to memory.  It is very likely that Pre-Calculus will be your hardest math course to date.  Make sure that you are aware of this early on and that you give yourself every chance of being successful.  Also, be ready to write out all the steps to problems so that you are embracing the rigors of Calculus that we are preparing you for.  That being said, we are going to have copious amounts of fun, voluminous amounts of learning, and ample challenges to sharpen our minds.  Let's have a wonderful year!

About Me

Walking the great wall of China, playing with aborigines in Papua New Guinea, riding around the pyramids, desert driving in the middle east, beautiful beaches, a wonderful wife, two amazing kids.... That's my life.  To all this I now add one of the greatest adventures I've ever had: Teaching.  This part of my adventure has been going on for a total of 10 years (including this one) right here in Hutto.  I've taught everything from 5th grade to the high school level and I've loved (almost) every minute of it!  My greatest privilege is to help you learn whatever math you want to learn to better yourself and prepare for your future.  I myself am always learning.  Currently the linguistics of Elvish encountered in the Lord of the Rings is a fascination, but I'm intrigued with just about anything and I love to learn new skills all the time.  I'm a big fan of Space-X, Kerbal Space Program, chess, was a hopeful fan of LK99, and I love what's going on in the frontiers of science.  What intrigues you?  I'd love to know the trajectory that your life is on and see where you end up some day.  You never truly know what you are capable of until you challenge yourself way beyond what you ever have!  I look forward to helping you in that!

Grading Policy (Honors Pre-Calculus)

General Grade Breakdown

Your grade in Geometry is comprised of 60% Test grades and 40% Daily grades.  Make sure that you are studying for tests and turning in every assignment.  A zero has a massive impact on your average.  Do the work and get the grade you want.  I do not believe in extra credit work.  I believe in doing the work right the first time.  Get the work done to the best of your ability and you will be successful.

A final exam each semester constitutes 15% of your semester average.

Frequency of Grades:

Daily/Homework: Minimum of 2 per week

Assessments: Minimum of 2 per 6 week grading period.

Grade Entering

Grades will be updated every Monday; therefore, it is the student’s responsibility to seek the opportunity to recover upon notification of a failing grade. It is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure grades are updated per campus policy.

 Grade Recovery

Failing grades not recovered within 1 day will be recorded as the final grade earned. Recovered grades are eligible to receive a maximum grade of 70%.  The corrections policy will be explained in class and correction papers will be available for print to help students do corrections in the appropriate manner.

Retesting

The student must complete all of the following actions before they can retest:

After a student has satisfactorily completed these actions, they may retest. They must retest prior to the next assessment administration. Semester final exams are not subject to retesting. Recovered assessments are eligible to receive a maximum grade of 70%.

Late Work Policy for Daily Assignments/Homework

There is no late work accepted in Honors/AP.  Students who have an excused absence on the day an assignment or the homework assignment is due must submit the assignment the day they return to receive full credit.
