Hippo Nation inspires all students to achieve excellence in academics, character and community.

Purpose

Hutto ISD’s literacy framework represents an overview of professional standards for literacy teachers, instructional guidelines, and resources to support effective, evidence-based literacy instruction.  The purpose of this framework is to support and strengthen the development and implementation of literacy instruction across the District by defining beliefs, creating aligned practices, and providing a shared knowledge base for all Hutto ISD teachers and administrators.

Belief Statements

In Hutto ISD, we believe…

  1. Effective literacy instruction is explicit, systematic, differentiated, and data-informed.

  2. Students should be engaged in authentic reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities daily.

  3. Student collaboration boosts motivation, increases engagement, and maximizes student understanding.

  4. High expectations, meaningful practices, and constructive feedback grow reflective readers and writers.

  5. Progress monitoring, intervention, and small group instruction are integral parts of effective literacy instruction.

  6. Reading and writing are tools for thinking and should be integrated across the curriculum.

  7. Professional development with ongoing support is necessary because teacher learning is directly related to student learning.

  8. Teaching students to read and write goes beyond teaching a collection of skills.  It is about showing students how to embrace literacy as a lifelong pursuit.
