PSAT/NMSQT

What is the PSAT/NMSQT?

The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a standardized test that serves as both practice for the SAT and a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program for 11th graders. It is co-sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

Why Take the PSAT/NMSQT?

SAT Practice: The PSAT/NMSQT provides a preview of the SAT, allowing students to experience the format and types of questions they will encounter on the SAT. It helps students identify their strengths and areas for improvement before taking the SAT.

National Merit Scholarship Eligibility: High school juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT are automatically entered into the National Merit Scholarship Program. High-scoring students may qualify for recognition and scholarships through this prestigious program.

Personalized Feedback: After taking the PSAT/NMSQT, students receive a detailed score report that highlights their performance in critical reading, mathematics, and writing. This feedback helps students understand where they excel and where they may need additional practice.

College Readiness: The PSAT/NMSQT measures skills that are important for college success, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical abilities. Performing well on the PSAT/NMSQT can give students confidence as they prepare for college admissions.

Who Should Take the PSAT/NMSQT?

The PSAT/NMSQT is taken by high school sophomores and juniors and is paid for by Hutto ISD. While sophomores take it primarily for practice, juniors are eligible for National Merit Scholarship consideration. However, any student interested in improving their SAT scores or assessing their academic skills is encouraged to take the test.

Home-schooled students who live within the Hutto ISD attendance boundaries are eligible to take the PSAT/NMSQT at Hutto High School.

When is the PSAT/NMSQT Administered?

The PSAT/NMSQT is usually administered in October each year. Hutto High School will register students for the exam.
