The Legend of the Hutto Hippo
More than a mascot, the Hutto Hippo has become a symbol of community, pride and belonging across Hippo Nation.
Why a Hippo?
In the early 1900s, a circus train traveling through Hutto reportedly stopped to take on water and fuel. During the stop, one of the circus hippos wandered away and settled into nearby Cottonwood Creek.
The unusual event quickly became local legend. Soon afterward, Hutto schools adopted the hippopotamus as their mascot, and by 1923 the Hippo was already appearing on official Hutto High School graduation materials.
