More than a mascot. The Hutto Hippo is a symbol of community, pride and belonging across Hippo Nation.

Why a Hippo?

The story of the Hutto Hippo begins with local legend, school pride and a mascot unlike any other.

A Community Legend

In the early 1900s, a circus train traveling through Hutto reportedly stopped to take on water and fuel. During the stop, one of the circus hippos wandered away and settled into nearby Cottonwood Creek.

The unusual event quickly became local legend. Soon afterward, Hutto schools adopted the hippopotamus as their mascot, and by 1923 the hippo was already appearing on official Hutto High School graduation materials.

What makes it memorable: The Hippo is not just a school symbol. It is part of Hutto's community identity.
