December E-Newsletter Seasons Greetings Hippo Nation,
It is hard to believe that the end of the semester is upon us and that we are in the middle of the 2021 holiday season. In August, we managed to survive the resurgence of COVID and masking safeguards. By September, we settled into new routines and assessed the impact of COVID on our student learning needs. By October, the schools began to feel somewhat normal. We are proud of the resiliency of our students and staff. They never cease to amaze us.
We continue to monitor the COVID infection rates in Williamson County, which are currently at 9.1 per 100 thousand. The goal had been to hit the single-digit infection rate and we have finally hit it. Based on these numbers, we will remove the mask requirements at the elementary levels. Staff and students may continue to wear masks if they choose to do so, but they are no longer strongly encouraged to be worn.
Mrs. Kendra Estes, Director of Health and Safety, has been working with our community vaccine providers to make the flu and COVID vaccines available to our families. The clinics will be on Wednesday, December 8 and 15 at HNES (Howard Norman Elementary School) from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. We strongly encourage our parents to consider allowing their children to receive one or both of these vaccines.
We invite you to be part of the ribbon-cutting event on Friday, December 10 at 6:00 p.m. for the Hutto Memorial Stadium. We will waive the gate fees for the scheduled soccer game that evening. Join us as we welcome the community to be part of the newest facility. We also look forward to having the Hutto Elementary School, Farley Middle School, and Hutto Middle School renovations completed over the winter holidays. We will send out special invitations to have respective school community members visit the newly-renovated learning spaces.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and district leadership, we wish you the best of the holidays. Thank you for your unwavering support of our teachers, counselors, administrators, and all support staff. May our students, staff, and families be blessed with a loving home, good health, and hope for a brighter 2022.
Leaving A Legacy for 2021-22,
Celina Estrada Thomas, PhD
Superintendent

Attendance is the Key to Success!
Regular and punctual attendance is the greatest single factor in school success. Texas Compulsory Attendance Law requires students to attend school regularly unless otherwise exempted by law. It is the responsibility of the parent and student to cooperate and communicate with the school on all attendance matters. The key to high school graduation is strong school attendance and parental involvement.
If your child is absent for any reason please contact your campus Attendance Office.

October E-Newsletter HEF Awards $109,565 in Excellence in Education Grants
Congratulations to all of the Hutto ISD teachers and staff who received an Excellence in Education Grant last month! Hutto Education Foundation (HEF) was able to fund 32 grants this year, totaling $109,565.
Message from the Superintendent
We began the 2021-22 year with enthusiasm, hope, and optimism. Within a matter of days, that enthusiasm was met head-on with a resurgence of the COVID-19 variant and staffing shortages in numerous areas. The best-laid plans were quickly reset to focus on safety and taking care of our students and staff's emotional and psychological needs. Mary Standard, the HHS Admin. Assistant, said it best as she was trying to find coverage for unfilled substitute requests this week, "There's no better group of people than the staff at HHS. They're family!" I would echo those sentiments for every staff member of Hippo Nation. Our people see a need and they step in to fill in the gaps, especially when it involves taking care of our students. I could not be more proud of the resilient people who work and give so much of themselves unselfishly to Hutto ISD!
Sincerely,
Celina Estrada Thomas, Ph.D.
Hutto ISD Superintendent
Hutto Memorial Stadium Construction Delayed Due to Spring Rains
Last week’s rains have caused a delay in the final construction phase of Hutto Memorial Stadium and it will not be completed in time for the Grand Opening originally scheduled for October 15. We regret to inform our community of this change but look forward to opening safely and with all the celebratory festivities that we have planned.
The game scheduled for October 15 against Stony Point has been rescheduled for Thursday, October 14 at Dragon Stadium. The official Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting will now be held on Friday, October 29, prior to the varsity game against Vandegrift. Senior Night and Homecoming will also be held on this memorable night. Mr. Smith, principal at HHS, will send out more details about the change of events to the parents and students.
School Board Elections Survey
The Board of Trustees is interested in gathering feedback from the community about school board elections. Current Board Policy BBB (LOCAL) calls for school board elections to be at large. This means that all candidates run for the number of positions that are up for election. The top vote-getters win the respective number of positions that are open.
Please click here for more information and to complete the survey.

Update on El Paso Strong
T-shirt SalesAt the Freedom Game against El Paso Del Valle on September 13, Hippo Nation made a tremendous statement about its character and compassion. Approximately 400 people purchased "Hippo Nation is El Paso Strong" t-shirts to honor our friends from El Paso who are dealing with the terrible after-effects of the August 3 shooting in that city. On behalf of all of those who purchased shirts, Hutto ISD will be sending $2,000 to the El Paso Community Foundation, which will then distribute those funds to first responder support groups. Many fans sat on the El Paso side to let the Del Valle players know they were not alone. Since the Del Valle band couldn't make the trip, the Hutto Band played their school song both pre- and post-game. In addition, a concrete hippo, painted by HHS art student Camryn Strickland with "Hippo Nation" on one side and "El Paso Strong" on the other was presented to the El Paso team and coaches before the game.
Thank you, Hippo Nation, for letting so many see the heart behind the Hippos! Here are some links to local media coverage:

Our 4th-8th graders are currently reading a book called Restart.
"Chase's memory just went out the window.
Chase doesn't remember falling off the roof. He doesn't remember hitting his head. He doesn't, in fact, remember anything. He wakes up in a hospital room and suddenly has to learn his whole life all over again . . . starting with his own name.
He knows he's Chase. But who is Chase? When he gets back to school, he sees that different kids have very different reactions to his return. Some kids treat him like a hero. Some kids are clearly afraid of him. One girl in particular is so angry with him that she pours her frozen yogurt on his head the first chance she gets. Pretty soon, it's not only a question of who Chase is -- it's a question of who he was . . . and who he's going to be."From the #1 bestselling author of Swindle and Slacker, Restart is the spectacular story of a kid with a messy past who has to figure out what it means to get a clean start.
Students are reading the book, signing it, and passing it on to another student in their grade level. On October 28th and 29th, author Gordon Korman will visit our students!
Please encourage your students to read the book and pass it on to another student!
