Mr. Steven Van Meter
Hutto High School Head Football Coach and Athletic Director, Steve Van Meter, begins his fifth season leading the Hippos.
For Coach Van, this will be his 35th year as a Texas high school football coach and 25th as a head coach. He has coached in only two places – Hutto and Friendswood, which is quite unique for someone with that much longevity in the coaching profession.
In four year at Hutto, Van has an overall record of 28-18. He has led the Hippos to the playoffs three straight years, including the State 5A Quarterfinals in 2014. Prior to Hutto, he won 148 games in 20 years at Friendswood High School outside of Houston, an average of over seven wins a season.
In his career, Coach Van has 18 Playoff appearances, resulting in three regional titles, four regional quarterfinals and three state semi-finals.
As an athletic director, his programs have won two Lone Star Cup championships and have been the runner-up four times.
Van is only four wins from being in the top 150 all-time winningest coaches in Texas high school football, and he is 24 wins from 200 overall. A playoff appearance this year would move him into the top 50 all time by Texas high school coaches.
He is a seven time Houston Touchdown Club Coach of the Year Finalist and was inducted into the Greater Houston Football Hall of Honor in 2010.
Coach was instrumental in starting the Texas 7-on-7 competition. This summer Hutto was the consolation bracket champion in the State tournament in College Station.
He is legendary for building quarterbacks and started the Gulf Coast Quarterback Academy in Houston. One of his best ever will be leading the Hippos this fall.
Van has been married to Lisa for 38 years, and he long ago inducted her into the Coaches Wives Hall of Fame!
The Van Meters have three sons. Zach, 32, resides in Naples, Florida, and is in the liquefied natural gas industry. He is married to Zuney, and they have a 6 year-old daughter and 4 year-old son. The grandkids help keep everything in perspective for Van. Twin sons Brett and Kyle, 31, own two very successful insurance agencies in the Houston area. They often make the drive for Friday night lights and can be spotted on the Hippos sidelines.
Coach’s hobbies include golf, fishing and watching travel shows with Lisa.
His newest love is his new puppy – a Schnauzer named Jake.
