Important Information for NJES Parents

Dear Nadine Johnson Elementary parents/guardians,
Because our students’ safety and security is a top priority, Hutto ISD, with assistance from the Hutto Police Department, has completed safety audits of our drop off and pick up procedures at all elementary campuses. As a result, Nadine Johnson Elementary, along with all elementary campuses, will be establishing new student drop-off and pick-up procedures for the remainder of the school year. These changes are not the result of any issues or incidents, but are a proactive attempt to ensure each student is safe and secure while at school.
It is important that each and every student is supervised and accounted for during the busy drop-off and pick-up times.
The following new procedures are designed to prevent any safety concerns and will be changed, as of Tuesday, Oct. 30:
•Student Drop-off – Students will not be permitted in the school building prior to 7:15 a.m. All school doors will remain locked until this time. Please do not drop your child off at the school prior to 7:15 a.m., as there will not be adult supervision until then.
*The morning drop-off point for car rider drop off has been changed to the East side of NJES. Parents should enter the parking lot on the East side of the building at the intersection of Carl Stern Blvd. and Front St. Staff and Hutto police will be available to help direct traffic.
*The front of NJES will be used for parents that are parking or walking up to pick up their children. Parents must park in the front spaces, or across the street in the high school stadium parking area.
*Bus traffic will be routed to the West side of the building. Students will no longer be dropped off on the West side of the building and car traffic will not be allowed on the West side of the building.
*Please remember the 20 mph speed limit and to use turning signals when appropriate.
*Deadline for Notification of Student Pick-up & Bus Changes – The school office must be notified of all dismissal time bus changes and student pick-up changes by 2 p.m. This will give staff plenty of time to notify your child’s teacher of any end of the day changes. Of course, we recognize that emergency situations occur, and we will certainly do our best to accommodate you in any emergency.
*Dismissal/Student Pick-up – Because there is a large amount of traffic in and around the school building during our dismissal time, it is extremely important that we take extra care to monitor the comings and goings of students and visitors.
*Parents parking or walking up to pick up their child should park in the front spaces, or across the street, in the high school stadium parking area. They should remain outside the front of the school building. Parents parking or walking up to pick up their child will give the name of their child and show their pink slip to a staff member outside, who will announce via radio the names of the students to be picked up. Those students will then be released. If the parent does not have their pink slip, they must go to the office to pick up their child.
*Parents driving up to pick up their child must enter the parking lot on the East side of the building. There will be no car rider pick up in the front or West side of the building. Parents in the car rider line will give the name of their child and show their pink slip to a staff member outside, who will announce via radio the names of the students to be picked up. Those students will then be released. If the parent does not have their pink slip, they must go to the office to pick up their child.
*Students who walk or ride bikes will be released normally. However, the safety of each of our students is a partnership between the school and our parents. While on Nadine Johnson Elementary property, your child’s safety is our top priority and we will do everything we can to keep your child safe and secure. However, once your child leaves Nadine Johnson Elementary property (the area beyond Carl Stern Blvd. and Front St.), we need your help to ensure their safety. Parents should take an active role in ensuring their child’s safety in getting to and from school. Please review the safety tips at the end of this letter with your children.
*All students who are picked up by their parents will be kept indoors until their parent arrives. Parents will not be allowed anywhere else in the building during this dismissal time.
*Hutto Police and HISD School Resource Officers will be present the first week of these changes to help with traffic changes and any questions. After that, they will be present when available to assist in drop-off and pick-up procedures.
Only parents and designated guardians will be permitted to pick up or sign out their children unless the school is otherwise informed. If you have an older high school sibling or a babysitter picking up your child, please ensure that person is approved to pick up your child. If you would like to change the status of your child (car rider, bike rider, walker), please inform your child’s teacher.
Finally, in addition to new drop off and pick up procedures, you will notice signs on all exterior doors of the building notifying visitors that they must enter through the main entrance at the front of the building and must check in with the front office. Any violators will be cited for trespassing per the Texas Education Code, section 37.107.
Again, these procedures are a preemptive approach to ensure the safety of all Hutto ISD students and staff. Hutto ISD and Nadine Johnson appreciate the cooperation of HPD in planning the new parent/guardian drop off and pickup procedures and assistance of parents/guardians as the change is implemented. The school district will monitor the effectiveness of the change.

Hutto ISD Safety Tips
Because Hutto ISD and Nadine Johnson Elementary are committed to ensuring the safety, health and security of each of our students, we would like to take this time to remind you to talk to your children about their safety, especially while walking home from school.
To help keep our students safe during their walk home from school, school administrators would like to emphasize several important safety tips. Parents are encouraged to reinforce the safety messages at home. Some tips to share with students include:
• Always walk or bike with a friend, other students or a parent.
• Be alert to what is happening and who is around you.
• Keep your distance from strangers.
• Never accept treats or rides from a stranger, even if the person says a parent sent them. Do not go with a stranger even if they say a parent is hurt or they need help finding a lost pet.
•If a stranger approaches you, scream and run, then find an adult you know and report what happened immediately.
•Always stick to the same safe route in traveling to and from school or a friend’s house.
•Don’t play in deserted areas, such as empty playgrounds, parks, or construction sites.
•If you think someone is following you, go where there are other people. Don’t hide or go home if no one else is there.
•Report any incidents to a trusted adult immediately.
If you or your child sees anything suspicious, please call 9-1-1 to reach the Hutto Police Department. Remember, safety starts at home. Talk with your children.
